We don’t take care of our appearance just for others. We do it for ourselves, as well. It just feels better inside when you look your best outside. You don’t need to be a fashion maven. Just a fresh coat of paint and a clean outfit makes you feel better about yourself.

The clothes anybody chooses to wear will reflect their mood, their lifestyle, their occupation and will reveal many things about their personality. If a woman chooses women’s brown boots with platform heels, that is saying a lot about her. If she chooses to wear a pair of black pumps, that too tells a story.

Women, far more than men, understand the subliminal power of fashion. They same woman will choose radically different outfits to suit the occasion or her mood, while most men will stick within a fairly narrow range of safe parameters. A man may wear brown boots, but they will not be overly distinctive looking and for formal occasions, he will wear polished black shoes, but they will be of a conservative style that won’t make him stand out in a crowd.

One of the most fascinating things about fashion is the fact that we don’t always choose what we wear with a view to having it seen by others. Sometimes we buy something that we have no intention of ever letting anyone else see. Very conservative men have been caught out wearing outlandish underwear. Often a single woman will choose to sleep in some cozy Nautica sleepwear just because she likes it. Why is this done?

Sometimes we need to do things only for ourselves. Our hobbies are something we do just because they please us. It’s not a waste of money to buy scrapbooking tools if you love that craft. It may not make you any money and you may not even share it with others, but you like it and that’s enough. The same thing goes for a favorite pair of pajamas. You don’t need a reason to wear them other than that you like to.

We don’t indulge ourselves just for the sake of indulging ourselves enough anymore. There’s always the pressure to capitalize on every minute. Sure, it’s hard to make ends meet, so we all need to weigh our purchases carefully. But these days, we are denying ourselves so much and pushing ourselves so hard, we deserve to treat ourselves to something that is just for ourselves and no one else.

That’s not to say that you should go out and spend lavish amounts of money on yourself when you can’t afford to. If you can’t afford a new handbag, then get a new lipstick. If you want a pair of Mickey Mouse underwear, go ahead and buy them. Give yourself a break!
