Sitting and Knees: This youth soccer coaching drill involves just 2 players and a ball. One player needs to sit on the ground with the legs stretched out in the front. The second player will stand directly in front of the first one and throw the ball really low towards him or her. The idea is to throw the ball short so that the one heading it has to move forward to strike the ball.

This activity should go on with a player positioned with both knees on the ground. Here, the player will have to lunge forward to strike the ball. This drill is useful in teaching the players to use their head in guiding the ball.

Head out of Hands: To work with this drill, you need to have cones and a ball for each player. It requires the player to hold the ball with his hands and then knock the ball out of their hands by heading it. They should be taught to move their head to the ball and not move the ball to their head.

Use of cones can help in teaching them the skill of heading to a specific location. The players learn the techniques to head the ball in a direction using their head.

In youth soccer drills, the basis of a game is its defense and though I strongly believe in this, you may have your own opinions. In a match where the score remains at 0-0 for either side reflects a perfectly played defense.

But, in kids soccer drills, there are two phases to winning a game. First is when an exceptional defense is demonstrated. The second feature is the ability of the offensive players to rise above the other team’s defense.

If your players are not able to get the ball, they’ll not be able to score. Some coaches follow the practice of training their kids in just one aspect; offense or defense. But, a player is completely trained only when he is proficient in playing offense when the ball is with him or her and defense when it is with the other team’s players.

In youth soccer practice, players who let the ball go out of their possession should instantly go for the ball. The reason that this should be followed is that the player who has lost the possession is nearest to the ball. Therefore, it’s easy for this player to pressurize the one in the possession of the ball now.

This may also be seen as the player trying to get the ball back as soon as is possible. This will also provide enough time to other players in the team to return to their form and get into the defensive positions. This will not allow the player in the opposite team to make a free run on the field with the ball.

Players can be made to learn these skills by following the given techniques;

Immediate chase: When this is effectively done in youth soccer drills, it puts pressure on the opponent from all the sides. And then what happens is that the opponent either makes a wrong pass or loses the possession of the ball.

Fall back and delay: This requires the remaining team members to fall back, and challenge the opponent with the ball and delay him or her from getting into their team’s goal area.

As the most risky places on the field is the center, you must instruct your players to make the opponent run towards the touchline. This ultimately leads to the player not being able to make a pass and also move around in different directions.

Arc of Concentration: When it comes to scoring, the most dangerous area is the arc of concentration. Maximum number of goals is scored by players in the arc of concentration. So it’s very important to teach the players in youth soccer coaching to concentrate on moving the ball outside of this area.

This arc falls right ahead of the goal. It originates from one corner post of the goal crossing through the corner of the goal box and moving on to the touchline. With the ball inside this area, it is highly probable that a goal will be scored.

Another option is to incorporate games that can do without a goalkeeper or where his movement can be limited to a given area. The probability of players scoring goals is also increased by adding more goals or enlarging the ones that are already being used.

1. Stationery ball shot by a stationery player.

2. Stationery ball being shot by a moving player.

3. Moving ball being shot by a stationery player.

4. A moving player shooting a moving ball.

In youth soccer coaching, players should be taught how to strike the ball properly while shooting. Majority of the players take the shots using the inside of their feet. This helps the players improve their shooting capabilities.

In situations when a lot more power is required, the players should be trained to use the instep of their foot to strike the ball. Their toes should be downwards and the ankles should be locked.

Elevation of the shoot is also affected by the placement of the non-kicking foot. Teach the players that they should keep their non-kicking foot a little ahead of the ball. This will keep the shot to the ground. Ensure that the players focus on striking the ball. Getting rid of all the distracting elements helps them focus better.

As the players improve their shooting technique, raise the difficulty level in the practice games. For instance, as their shooting improves, throw balls at various speeds.

Soccer Coaching Drills – Discover The Art Of Trapping

What if I told you that 50% of soccer coaching drills should focus on enhancing the trapping skills of your players? You won’t take it seriously. But make no mistake here. It’s trapping other than passing and dribbling which enhances your team’s ability to become a champion as per an investigation.

When a player catches the ball and is able to maintain its possession with him, it’s trapping. Such soccer exercises allow players to use thighs, feet and chest in doing so.

You must acquaint your players with this skill of trapping the ball. If not, they will never really be in control of the game because everything else comes after trapping the ball. Some of the following techniques help in enhancing the trapping skills of the players.

Use your feet: As a coach, you must teach the basic lesson of using the feet to maneuver the ball. Particularly in kids soccer drills, teach the kids to use inside of their foot. This is because the inside area of the foot id wide and very useful in engaging with the ball.

Soccer Drills

In soccer coaching drills, players can be taught to use the instep or crown of the foot along with entire foot when the players are senior and established. In cases where the ball bounces a lot, it is best to make them use their shin or ankle to tackle the ball.

Thigh Movement: To control high-speed and bouncy ball, thigh can be used very efficiently. Instruct the players to get in front of the ball, stand on one feet and rise the other thigh to stop the ball. Most importantly, practice dropping your knee once it connects with the ball for the ball to drop down and stay with you rather than getting away.

Continue repeating this exercise till the time you learn it by heart i.e. stopping the ball with your thigh and then tumbling the thigh down so the ball stays somewhere close to you.

Use the Chest: You can also use your chest to trap the ball that is high up in the air, just like your thigh. Make the players stand in front of the ball and then ask them to take their chests out as if to confront the ball. This will have the effect of breaking the ball’s speed and tumbling it down immediately.

But make sure that in soccer training drills, this technique should not be rigorously taught to the young players. It is natural for them to use their hands in dealing with the ball while attempting to use their chest. This can prove to be dangerous as the kids might develop a habit of using their hands while tackling the ball.
