Exciting choices for pregnancy

One of the most precious times for a woman’s life is pregnancy.Quite a few women desire to have children.  The time of pregnancy is the time when those desires come true.

During a woman’s pregnancy, a bunch of decisions and options will have to be decided upon.  One of those choices is how to deliver the baby.  Sounds strange to say it is a choice but it is.Most women will chose to use medicine to help them have the baby. But there is a movement that is getting larger who decide to have the baby naturally.  That means no medicine to aid in delivery.  I have seen this from first hand experience as a San Diego midwife.  It is from that experience that I want to share some benefits.

Now how come more and more women are deciding on having no medicine for delivery.A few reasons.  First of all most women are realizing using medicine actually slows down the pregnancy.  When you are in pain and want to deliver as fast as possible, medicine defeats the purpose.A lot of women are now starting to understand.  What women don’t realize is that they can do it that way. If they make the choice to have it done that way, they can utilize the services of a midwife.  In my part of the country there are quite a few midwives in San Diego.

A midwife is able to help a woman gently deliver.  They could choose a waterbirth.  Waterbirth is the use of water to aid in soothing the pain and helping the delivery.

Also if a woman chooses, a midwife can help if they choose to deliver at home. Once again you can find a homebirth midwife in San Diego if you look.

The many benefits of having the delivery at home is that the environment is less stressed and more relaxed. These two benefits makes a natural delivery inviting.  If you are pregnant, it might be a choice you would want to make.

How to be safe when hiring a midwife

Pregnancy, what a beautiful time in the lives of a woman.  Well, I guess aside from the sickness.  But beyond that, the expectation of a new baby coming is exciting.

Usually, for a lot of women, how they are going to deliver the baby isn’t the big question.  Because most women will go the standard route of a medical procedure involving hospitals, drugs, and doctors.

But for some women, an alternative is available. That alternative is finding a midwife to help you have a baby the natural way.  And it is that alternative I am going to share from my experience as a San Diego midwife.

For those that don’t know, midwives are women who perform natural, no drugs, deliveries. This usually means no doctors.

Often times midwives in San Diego perform these services at homes.Although, not known by most people, this way to deliver a baby is a safe and regulated alternative.

The women, or midwife, who performs this service is fully regulated. They can be licensed midwives or certified midwives that have a regulatory board that oversees them.

Sometimes the midwife can be a nurse, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

This form of delivery is an option a lot of women choose and includes waterbirth in San Diego. Mostly the choice is made by women because they do not want any drugs during delivery and to prevent any drugs entering the new baby.  Also it is for women who don’t want any invasive procedures such as episiotomys.

When you are making a big decision such as the method of delivering your baby, you want to make right decisions. With anything, you want to be sure you choose the right person.

Like I mentioned before, this is a highly regulated industry. With that being the case, finding a good licensed or certified midwife is easy.

All you have to do is find your state regulatory board that  oversees midwives and do a background check to see if there have been any complaints or issues with your prospective midwife.

Something as simple as this step will help you determine if this is a midwife you can trust. It is still obvious that even though there are no complaints or reports about your midwife, you still want to verify some references.

You want to find someone who has clients that only speak highly of them. With something as private and personal as a delivery, going through these steps will help you pick the right midwife for your delivery.

Benefits of Delivering with a Midwife

Labor and delivery; it brings joy but also pain for the woman.  Obviously joy because of the new baby, but ask any woman, and they will tell you a source of unspeakable pain.

Well because there is that pain involved, two schools of thought have come about on how to deal with labor and delivery.  I am going to offer some perspective on one particular school of thought that I have gained first hand experience with by being a homebirth midwife San Diego.

There is the medical model for delivering babies which is tied in with using drugs to kill the pain, and sometimes c -sections to finish the delivery.

While there is a lesser known model, not as widely accepted, for those that have experienced it and believe in it, they consider it a safer alternative for the woman.

That model is the midwifery model as it is called. That model is the exact opposite of the medical model which is usually used.  Where the medical model relies heavily on medicine, hence “medical”, midwifery relies on the natural.Midwifery philosphy believes that pregnancy, labor, and delivery should happen as naturally as possible because it is a natural process.

This model is a profession practiced by midwives. Midwives San Diego are generally woman, who attend the birth, often times at the mother’s home. This midwife would help with some techniques that help the woman go through labor as naturally as possible without drugs.

Against most popular beliefs, not using medicine during labor actually allows the labor to happen quite a bit faster because drugs usually slow down the labor.

The midwife is a professional with a regulatory board that certifies and licenses the individual.

Although a lot of the times they are not a nurse or a doctor, a midwife sometimes is a nurse also.

Even though they are not a doctor or nurse, they do carry with them some medical equipment, such as resuscitation devices and suturing equipment.

So this describes what a midwife is and what midwifery is about in relation to pregnancy and delivery.

Their goals are to allow the birth and delivery to happen as naturally as possible.  This reduces the likelihood of a c-section.Does not subject you to hospital procedures that are invasive such as episiotomys. There will be less use of managing it with medical techniques such as breaking the water or using any types of drugs for the pregnancy. And for the woman the best part of all is that labor and delivery usually happen quicker naturally.

Hopefully this was informative and helped you understand some of the benefits of midwifery and having a midwife there for your pregnancy.  At the very least, hopefully it gives you more options to explore.  Remember this is first hand knowledge from a San Diego midwife.
